Photo essay
A commissioned series shot in the stores and the studio.
Rijksmuseum, Operation Night Watch
Scanning the whole painting took about 56 days spread over three months, in public, in a purpose-built glass chamber. That is a photo essay waiting to be shot.

The shot list
The chamber from the gallery floor
Visitors in frame. This is the one that explains the whole project without a caption.
Gloved hands and a scalpel
Shallow depth. Nothing identifiable behind.
The screen mid-scan
The data as the conservator sees it.
One conservator, working
Not looking at the camera.
The surface at raking light
Where the varnish edge is still visible.
End of day, lights down
Closes the sequence.
Six of a twelve-shot brief. The hatched boxes are empty on purpose. A photo essay page with stock photography in it is worse than no photo essay page.
What ships before the shoot is the brief, laid out as the page it will become. A photographer can quote from it, and you can see the rhythm of the sequence before anyone books a day. The frames stay hatched until real photographs land in them.
