Tickets go on sale every Tuesday at 10:00 for a date six weeks later and sell out in minutes, so the moment a visitor decides is the moment the button has to be there.

Six things about this building
The house was built in stages, and the stages do not agree with each other. The oldest wall is in the kitchen and nobody noticed it until 1974.
What the family left behind is not what they valued. It is what was too heavy, too unfashionable or too broken to take.
The garden is a reconstruction. There is one photograph, taken in 1908, and everything you can see was worked out from it.
The rooms upstairs were let out for forty years. The wallpaper in the back bedroom has eleven layers, and the fourth one down is the only surviving example of that pattern.
Visitor numbers doubled after the roof was finished. So did the wear on the stairs, which is why there is a one-way route.
The last private owner sold the contents at auction and the trust has been buying them back, one lot at a time, since 1991.
Getting here
The lane is single track for the last mile. There is no parking at the gate.
Trains stop at the village twice an hour. It is a twenty minute walk, uphill.
The bar waits until sixty percent of the page has gone past, so it arrives when somebody has decided rather than while they are still deciding. The thin progress line at the top is the honest half of the bargain: it tells the reader how much is left before the interruption shows up.
